These photos are from a couple of visits, but mostly from 2010. It was touch and go whether we made it that time as the forecast was for heavy snow. The cottage owner had been in touch to ask if we had a 4-wheel drive vehicle, and if not, he suggested that we might want to consider not risking journey. When it came time to be setting off, the promised snow hadn’t yet arrived so we made it safely there.
Once we got settled in however, the snow turned up big style! It was nice to watch at first, but as it got deeper and deeper we began to worry about getting snowed in.
We made our way down to the beer festival at the Cropton Inn later that evening, enjoying a few beers and hot snacks. As the temperature dropped though, some of the beer lines froze and they had to be taken off.
It was a memorable stay, in particular due to the journey home. The car was under a foot of snow, but the main problem was that the parking brake had frozen on and I couldn’t get the car to move off! Thankfully, Mike the owner, had a 4-wheel drive parked nearby, he used it to tow us off and the brakes released with a bang. I didn’t dare to stop to thank him, I just waved out of the window.
On the way home, the main road had been closed, and we had to detour along some back lanes, where the snow was so thick, it was impossible to tell where the edge of the road was! Thankfully we made it back through to civilisation in one piece and were relieved to get home.
